DIY Lip Balm:

Wishing your favourite lip balm weren’t so expensive? Weare excited to tell you that we have an even better option than buying that expensive lip balm. If you have some free time and some of our flavours, you have everything that you need to make your own favourite lip balm! Continue reading below for step-by-step instructions on how to make a flavoured lip balm

Create Your Base – What’s in It?

The base only contains two main ingredients—beeswax and coconut oil. Beeswax is what solidifies and hardens the mixture, so depending on how soft you want it to be, that will determine the amount of coconut oil you add to the mixture. Typically, for every one-part beeswax you use, pair it with two parts coconut oil.
Remember that coconut oil does have its own scent, so the more you put in your base, the more you are going to smell it!
Heat It Up

Make sure to not overheat the beeswax. You should never allow the wax to get to a boil or let it bubble. When the beeswax melts completely into a liquid, that is when you mix it with the coconut oil. These two materials, when combined, should not harden right away but blend nicely. Over time, this mixture will harden. If, for whatever reason, your mixture begins to harden right away, all you must do is warm it up again. This sometimes happens to the mixture if the beeswax was not soft enough to begin with.

Add Your Flavour

Pick your favourite food flavour from our online web collection to create the perfect flavour lip balm. Once you have your oil based flavour, add it to the mixture. Think about how many different lip balm flavours there are out there!
Your options on flavours are endless. Feel free to add any other additional ingredients to make a unique flavour for a lip balm that’s all yours!

Let It Solidify

First, pour the mixture into whatever container you are going to want it in. Then just as stated above, the mixture over time will begin to harden. Just for reference, if you use the two-to-one ratio of coconut oil to beeswax, it should take a little under ten minutes to completely harden.
And just like that, you are finished!
When you are looking at yourself in the mirror, enjoying how fabulous and tasty this lip balm you created is, you will be thanking us here at Get Suckered for the tip! Below is a sample recipe for a flavoured lip balm:

INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon beeswax beads
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
1 tablespoon shea butter
2-4 drops (subjective) OOO Flavours “your choice” Flavouring
6-8 Plastic tubes and/or clear plastic pots
DIRECTIONS
Measure beeswax beads, sweet almond oil and shea butter into a small glass mixing jar (a clean condiment jar works well) or a 1-cup Pyrex measuring cup. Fill a small saucepan with 1 inch of water and heat to simmer. Place glass jar or measuring cup in pan and allow plant butters and beeswax to melt. Do not overheat. Remove from pan.
Add flavouring and mix well. Pour into containers and allow to harden undisturbed for 20 minutes.

OOO Flavours Suggestions: Pina Colada, Peppermint, Banana Sweet Cream, Black Cherry, Blood Orange, Caramel Cream, Cheesecake, Coconut, Grape Punch, Vanilla Maple, Tangerine (Natural), Fruit Punch.

Try a combination of flavours such as 2-4 drops of OOO Flavours Tangerine (Natural) and 2-4 drops of OOO Flavours Peppermint Flavouring. Peppermint adds a brisk, tingling sensation to your lip balm.

Colouring Option: Inexpensive lipstick works best. To colour your lip balm, slice off a small amount of the lipstick and stir into melted lip balm mixture, then add your flavouring and pour into containers.

What are PG & Oil-based flavors?

PG stands for Propylene Glycol, an organic compound. It is a clear, viscous, odorless liquid used as the NFI (non-flavor ingredient).  PG Based Flavors are water-soluble and can be used in a variety of applications such as an additive for beverages - mixed drinks and smoothies, icing and frostings, baked goods, foods, yogurts, ice-cream, medications and more.  These flavors have a more distinct taste and smell.

Oil Based Flavors are OS or Oil Soluble. Our Oil Based Flavors contain the NFI (non-flavor ingredient) Soybean Oil. Oil Based Flavors can withstand heat up to 400 F. This may include hard candy, chocolate and popcorn making. They can also be used for lip & body cosmetics, and CBD/THC tinctures products.

Plesae note, at the moment we do not have any oil based flavour in our store . All of our food flavours excpet (OOO MCT Oil) are water soluble.

Can water based flavours be used for DIY lip balm?

Typically, water-based flavours are not used in making lip balms. Lip balms are primarily composed of waxes, oils, and butters, which are all oil-based or fatty substances. Water and oil do not mix well, so adding water-based flavors to a lip balm formulation can lead to separation and spoilage of the product.
Instead, lip balms are formulated with oil-soluble or oil-dispersible flavors. These flavours are specifically designed to be compatible with oils and fats, ensuring they blend evenly and stay incorporated in the lip balm mixture.
Using water-based flavors in a lip balm may introduce moisture to the product, which can lead to mold growth, spoilage, or a shortened shelf life. It can also compromise the consistency and efficacy of the lip balm, as water can dilute the protective barrier that the lip balm creates on the lips.
To create lip balms with pleasant flavours, it's essential to use lip-safe and oil-soluble flavourings that are specifically formulated for this purpose. These flavorings will ensure that your lip balm maintains its quality, stability, and taste over time.
Soon in Taste Nest, we will have lip-safe oil based flavours. We will create a new category called Oil flavours for lip balm. If you are interested, plesae keep an eye on this page.
